Atomoxetine is a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor approved for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Tomoxetin (atomoxetine) is used to increase the ability to pay attention and decrease impulsiveness and hyperactivity in children and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).




General information

Atomoxetine 40mg is used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as part of a total treatment plan, including psychological, social, and other treatments. It may help to increase the ability to pay attention, concentrate, stay focused, and stop fidgeting. It is thought to work by restoring the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

How to use Atomoxetine 40mg ?

Usual Adult Dose for Attention Deficit Disorder

  • Initial Dose: 40 mg/day orally.
  • Maintenance Dose: Increase dose to 80 mg/day orally after a minimum of 3 days at the initial dose.
  • Maximum Dose: After 2 to 4 additional weeks, the dose may be increased up to 100 mg/day in patients who have not achieved an optimal response.

Comments: Take dose once a day in the morning OR as evenly divided doses in the morning and late afternoon/early evening.

Usual Pediatric Dose for Attention Deficit Disorder

70 kg or Less:

  • Initial Dose: 0.5 mg/kg/day orally.
  • Maintenance dose: Increase dose to 1.2 mg/kg/day after a minimum of 3 days at the initial dose.
  • Maximum dose: 1.4 mg/kg/day or 100 mg/day, whichever is less.

Over 70 kg:

  • Initial Dose: 40 mg/day orally.
  • Maintenance dose: Increase dose to 80 mg/day after a minimum of 3 days at the initial dose.
  • Maximum dose: After 2 to 4 additional weeks, the dose may be increased up to 100 mg/day in patients who have not achieved an optimal response.

Comments: Take dose once a day in the morning OR as evenly divided doses in the morning and late afternoon/early evening.

Use: Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in pediatric patients age 6 and older.

Possible side effect

Commonly reported side effects of atomoxetine include: constipation, insomnia, decreased appetite, and xerostomia. Other side effects include: dermatitis, dysmenorrhea, erectile dysfunction, dizziness, dyspepsia, ejaculatory disorder, urinary hesitancy, ejaculation failure, and diaphoresis. Along with its needed effects, atomoxetine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Less Common side effects of Atomoxetine:

  • Hives or welts

  • large, hive-like swelling on the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, or sex organs
  • redness of the skin

Rare side effects of Atomoxetine:

  • dark colored urine
  • fainting
  • flu-like symptoms
  • loss of bladder control
  • muscle spasm or jerking of all extremities
  • pelvic pain in male
  • right upper belly pain or tenderness
  • sudden loss of consciousness
  • yellow eyes or skin

Precautions

Before taking Atomoxetine 40mg, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using Atomoxetine 40mg, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: a certain adrenal problem (pheochromocytoma), bladder or prostate problems, glaucoma, heart problems (such as irregular heartbeat, heart failure, previous heart attack, problems with heart structure), family history of heart problems (such as sudden cardiac death, irregular heartbeat), high blood pressure, liver disease, personal/family history of mental/mood disorders (such as bipolar disorder, depression, psychosis, suicidal thoughts), stroke.

This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis).
Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

If used for a long time, this drug may affect a child's growth rate, weight, and final adult height. To reduce the risk, the doctor may recommend briefly stopping the medication from time to time. Check the child's weight and height regularly, and consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Storage

Store Atomoxetine 40mg at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
